Xiuhtezcatl (Shoe-TEZ-caught) Martinez was just six years old when he took the stage as an activist for our environment. Today, he leads a movement that is both local and global. As the Youth Director of Earth Guardians, a global organization dedicated to training young people to be effective leaders in the environmental, climate and social justice movements, Xiuhtezcatl helps turn activism into meaningful action. His Native American indigenous heritage and talents as a successful hip hop artist allow Xiuhtezcatl to engage in the climate movement in ways that cross generational barriers. From performing with Willow Smith and Jayden to addressing the UN General Assembly (three times) to serving on panels with Bernie Sanders and Van Jones, Xiuhtezcatl remains clear in his mission to save our planet by empowering people the world over to create meaningful change through the lives they are already living.

About Keynote Speaker Xiuhtezcatl Martinez

Xiuhtezcatl is a 24-year-old Indigenous environmental activist, recording artist and author. Since the age of six, Xiuhtezcatl has used his voice and art to inspire a new wave of environmental activism that centers youth and Indigenous perspectives in global climate action.

Xiuhtezcatl first emerged as a prominent activist for protesting the impacts of the fossil fuel industry in his Colorado community. At 15, he gained worldwide recognition when he became the youngest person to address the United Nations General Assembly on the topic of climate change, and months later, joined twenty other youth to sue the federal government for failing to act on the climate crisis.

Xiuhtezcatl’s activism and music is grounded in his Indigenous Xochilmica roots as well as his lived experience growing up in a working-class, immigrant household. In his early adulthood, Xiuhtezcatl has grown a global platform to uplift community- led solutions to the climate crisis through a combination of art, storytelling and creative organizing. He is the face of global sustainability campaigns with brands like Nike, Dr. Martens and Levi’s, and serves as a social impact advisor to Seventh Generation.

Xiuhtezcatl has delivered speeches at over 100 conferences, institutions and schools across the world, and his two books, We Rise and Imaginary Borders, are taught in thousands of classrooms. He has made hundreds of press appearances, including on The Daily Show with Trevor Noah, Real Time with Bill Mahr, PBS Newshour, CNN, MSNBC and Univision. He holds dozens of awards and is listed on TIME Magazine’s “30 Under 30 List” and Rolling Stone’s “25 Under 25.”

Xiuhtezcatl is multilingual, having spent his early childhood between Colorado and Mexico. He is currently based in Los Angeles, California, where is working on his forthcoming album. He is represented by Next Models and recently signed with the Creative Artists Agency’s (CAA) music division.
