Talent Retention Strategies for Low-Status America

About Keynote Speaker Majora Carter

Majora Carter is a real estate developer who is quoted on the walls of the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture in DC: “Nobody should have to move out of their neighborhood to live in a better one” which is also the subtitle of her new book, Reclaiming Your Community.  She was invited back to TED stage this year to deliver a second talk based on the strength of that book, after launching the ted.com site in 2006 with her groundbreaking talk, Greening The Ghetto.

In 2021, her hip hop cafe, The Boogie Down Grind, was named Best in NYC by TimeOut NY and won an Al Fresco NY award for excellence in outdoor seating.  The experiential 3rd space venue serving high quality coffees, teas, local beers and sangria is part of her talent-retention strategy for breaking the patterns of either displacement or economic stagnation in American low-status communities.

She is a MacArthur Fellow, a Peabody Award winning broadcaster, and has 7 honorary PhDs.  Carter has been recognized by Goldman Sachs, News Corp, Center for American Progress, The Eleanor Roosevelt Society, and Business Insider among many other varied organizations.  Majora teaches Creativity, Innovation and Design at Princeton University, and will be co-hosting the Planet Purpose podcast by Inc. Magazine this year.

We could not fail to be inspired by Majora Carter’s efforts to bring green space for exercise to the South Bronx. We need more ideas like these to bring solutions to minority communities.
