The true test for any leader is adversity. When things are going well, it is easy to lead. But when there is a crisis, such as a pandemic, a recession, or a change in government, leadership can be more difficult. Leopoldo Lopez understands what it takes to lead. While serving as Mayor of Chacao in Venezuela between 2000 and 2008, Venezuela became more authoritarian. Instead of accepting authoritarian policies that threatened democracy, he challenged the government and ended up in prison for his beliefs. In this engaging talk, Leopoldo will share what it takes to lead in the face of adversity. Audiences will come away with how communication, collaboration, learning from each other, and building a network of support can help leaders when their organizations face adversity.

In 2009, he founded the political party and freedom movement called Voluntad Popular (Popular Will) and became its national coordinator. Leopoldo López is the co- founder of the World Liberty Congress, an organization launched in 2022 that seeks to serve as the counterweight against the global autocratic alliance by connecting non-violent, prodemocracy activists from across the globe with the goal of having them share information and tactics that meaningfully further their nonviolent cause at home.
