John Ratzenberger gained his popularity by playing mail carrier “Cliff Clavin” on the sitcom Cheers. After reading for the part of “Norm Peterson” during the audition, he could tell he wasn’t going to get the part. Sensing an opportunity, he asked if there was a part for a bar know-it-all – which the producers decided was a great idea. “Cliff” became known for his outlandish stories of plausible half-truths, irrelevant trivia, and ignorant misinformation, as well as “Norm’s” iconic bar buddy. In real world, he worked as a archery instructor, journeyman carpenter, and oyster boat crewman.
He has had a voice-over part in all of Pixar’s feature films made to date. His roles include “P.T. Flea” the circus ring leader in A Bug’s Life; “The Abominable Snowman” in Monsters, Inc.; “Hamm” the Piggy Bank in Toy Story, Toy Story 2, and Toy Story 3; a school of moonfish in Finding Nemo; “The Underminer” inThe Incredibles; “Mack” the truck in Cars and Cars 2; “Mustafa” the waiter in Ratatouille; “John” inWALL-E; “Tom” the construction worker in Up; and “Gordon” in Brave.
Ratzenberger’s work for Pixar, as well as his parts in Superman and Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back, makes him the sixth most successful actor of all time, with total box office of over $3,000,000,000. He is currently in pre-production on a new television series with the purpose to awaken Americans to the shortage of skilled workers that threatens our country as a whole. He has recently been a recurring character on FX’s Franklin & Bash, LEGIT, Drop Dead Diva, Bones and CSI.
He created and starred in the Travel Channel series Made in America, which highlighted U.S.-made goods and workers. Ratzenberger is passionate about how important it is for this country to recognize the need for, and to provide the training to produce skilled laborers. With Made in America, John established a television benchmark and led the way for a new series of Deadliest Catch, Dirty Jobs, and Ice Road Truckers to celebrate the work ethic that built America. He co-authored A Common Man’s Salute to an Uncommon Country. His current foundation, the Foundation for America, exists to educate and prepare American workers, manufacturers, educators, innovators and leaders for an American manufacturing renaissance.
Beyond his acting career, John has spoken out on a number of social issues. As a co-owner of the company Eco-Pack, he produced environmentally conscious packaging materials. He also co-founded Nuts, Bolts & Thingamajigs, a foundation aimed at encouraging young people to explore careers in manufacturing, and has worked to raise awareness of juvenile diabetes.
