Leidy Klotz is the youngest Full Professor at the University of Virginia with appointments in two schools: Engineering and Architecture. His research fills in the gaps between design and behavioral science in pursuit of a more sustainable future.
Leidy has been awarded over $10,000,000 in competitive research funding, including a CAREER award from the National Science Foundation, as well as one of the very first awards through the NSF’s INSPIRE program. He founded and directs UVA’s Convergent Behavioral Science Initiative, which brings together scholars and students from across the university to engage in interdisciplinary research. Leidy’s scholarship benefits from diversity and inclusion; more than three quarters of his advisees, including ten now in faculty roles, are from underrepresented populations in their respective fields. Nationally, he has been recognized as one of 40-under-40 professors who inspire, receiving multiple institution-level teaching awards as well. Featured in top journals that include Nature and Science, Leidy has published over 80 peer-reviewed articles. He also engages a broad audience and has written for The Washington Post, The Globe & Mail, Scientific American, Fast Company, and Harvard Business Review, among others. Leidy is a frequent guest on interview programs, such as Hidden Brain, Freakonomics, InnovationHub, and Mindscape. And, hundreds of popular articles have highlighted his work in venues from The Wall Street Journal and The Atlantic, to The New York Review of Books and Grist, to national newspapers on five continents. Leidy is the author of Subtract, published in April 2021, with translations in eight languages.
